I have recently finished my first roll of 35mm film. I use a quick loading film camera so the film leader should have automatically been taken by the take up spool once the camera door was closed and the film advance lever was cranked.

However, after the exposure counter displayed 36, it still kept winding when I advance the film. It was about 15 shots after the 36 mark. I decided to rewind the film to take it out so I pressed the rewind button and began to spin the rewind lever BUT there was no resistance at all after one spin.

When I took out the film canister, the film was fully rewound and the leader was retracted into the canister.

My next roll was better though. I couldn't crank the film advance lever after 36 shots and there was resistance when I rewound the film. Just wondering what could have happened in my first roll so I know if I should repeat shooting that roll or proceed to processing it.

Welcome, ellebarcelona, you have one of the early canon models and it is getting a bit old. I suggest may need to lube the mechanism as the lubricants in these old camera dry out and need a clean and lube. Check out youtube for how to videos and if it is something you do not wish to under take then seek out someone who can. I have the 2.5 model of camera, I has been working OK so far.
