I have a 50D which does the same thing, does not work even with batteries that work in other cameras.

Generally its right next to the primary battery. Unless the coin battery is flat dead, im not sure it would be the culprit. I have had my bodies not save the time for a year or two and I never rushed to swap that battery ... I just reprogram the date /time every time i change the primary battery.

In any event, a beater body that uses 511 batteries is very inexpensive so I wouldn't consider newly purchased batteries a waste... id just get another 50d to make use of them.

Unfortunately it's not just the battery as the camera works fine except the jog wheel does not change the shutter speed , I tried spraying contact cleaner and flushing it out with compressed air but still no luck.

And do a hard reset? Also check that the micro switches on the card and battery covers are working; if they don't close properly, the machine won't turn on.
