manual focus on Canon RF mount inconsistent.

I'm finding the "focus by wire" manual focus on Canon RF mount lenses inconsistent. Meaning, I mark with tape completely out of focus and pull back to just shy of infinity. But if I pull back and forth from these physical positions with the manual focus ring the actual focus the lens sees and measures shifts.
For lenses without focus presets, how can I manage this and/or is there an explanation?
That said, are there any mechanical focus legacy lenses I could use on the r5 RF mount?

If you get an EF to RF adaptor then you can use all the existing EF mount lenses.

Thanks. Do you suspect the manual focus on the EF lenses don't have this issue?

Not exactly, I have never found any autofocus lens that gives truly satisfactory manual focus, although most of them are reasonably consistent. The stepper motor types (focus by wire) are the most inconsistent when used manually.
If you want reliable manual focus then you need a manual focus lens but modern autofocus cameras are not very good with them because they lack the focusing aids (split screen). You can get adaptors which will allow most of the older lens mounts to fit modern cameras but it is still a compromise.
The only real way to get reliable manual focus like we used to have with the old cameras is to get an old camera.
