Hi, I am a complete novice in photograpy. Always been interested but never had the money or time, to dip into the hobby, properly. Finally bit the bullet 2 weeks ago and ordered a Canon EOS R8 with RF 24-50 IS STM Kit. Extremely excited to get going with this camera. Problem is, the idiot delivery driver, threw the package at my door step when he delivered it. I have looked over the camera, everything looks in mint condition. As i dont seem to be getting anywhere, with my claim against the courier company, at the moment, I was wondering, how durable the camera is. What are the chances that it is damaged internally? Can anyone help with this? Too scared to put the battery in the camera and try it out. Also dont want to mess up the claim by trying the camera.
They are pretty durable:... was the item packaged with bubble wrap around it in the box they placed it in??? Where was it purchased from? Can you just return it un-opened for refund? If you opened it you may as well put the battery in and see if it functions ... because you either have opened it or you haven't. Depending on how well it was padded additionally in packaging and how hard it was thrown it is possible could have been damaged. Did you get on video of the throw? They should be liable if they ignore fragile labeling on the package. That said these items brand new are packed with Styrofoam in the retail box, and if they have boxes in bubble padding inside a larger box they should be able to take a pretty good shaking. I'd be a bit more concerned about the lens getting knocked out of alignment personally than the camera itself having an issue, but again its all on how hard of a hit and how much padding in the package.
Thank you. As each day is going by, im getting more and more tempted to charge the battery and try it. Think Ill give UPS a couple more week days to take the claim further before i do it. I live in Norway but ordered from Amazon UK. Not sure if it is possible for me to return. Stupidly, in my annoyance, i opened the everything to check it all. Videoed myself doing it, just in case i did find anything. I have the delivery guy on camera, throwing the package. Wasnt packed brilliantly. Original box could be my saving grace as it was in plastic trys inside, so that wouldve taken most of the impact. Th Amazon box was only just bigger than the original, with a rolled up piece of har paper as padding. Wont be ordering something so expensive to be delivered again. Norwegian prices in future or just wait until I pay a visit to the homeland (UK). Thank you again
You have done your due diligence recording the opening and having the recording of the throwing. I would be curious as to the speed and distance of the throw, as would be UPS, i assume they will want to see it. I also imagine that it will be hard to collect from them unless you can prove damage. My suggestion.... Its opened, start using it heavily today, make sure you put in as many hours between now and them contacting you. That way you can identify if there are any random glitches with camera motherboard or if the lens is acting weird or had any alignment issues impacting sharpness etc,... You will have a much better argument with them if there is an issue and you need to send for replacement or repair and that would be something they could cover costs for. If it makes you feel better I have bought all my digital camera bodies and lenses online over the last 20 years and while i never was around when delivered to catch anyone chuck any boxes, but yeah in transit who knows what has happened loading and unloading from planes and trucks, I think you'll be fine as they are packed for a bit of resiliency. I have never had an issue with any gear not working correctly right out of the box.
Honestly let's say the lens was messed up from the get go, the gear is new and under warranty so I would personally just call canon and say i have X problem with the lens or whatever and just bought this. They probably would replace it not questions asked. I probably would not mention the delivery issue as I would not want them to have a reason to say they wont take care of it and pass the buck to UPS saying "well then they need to buy you a new one... " if that makes sense, i would just keep it simple and get my gear replaced if it was broken out of box. To me quick replacement gear would be more important than making example out of the delivery company.
Well, after reading your views, I charged the battery last night and have had a go this morning. Looks like eveything is working perfectly fine and the picture quality is awesome. Will see what UPS have to say but like you said, may as well use it as much as possible in the mean time. Whole new world of settings and fun being opened up with this camera. Bit daunting but looking forward to having some fun and figuring out what lens I will upgrade to first. Always had the intention to use the kit lens to figure out how I would use the camera most and go from there. Thank you again for the advice and hopefully wont need to contact Canon for a warranty replacement.
when ever i buy a new or second hand lens i always do a critical focus test to see if all is well, even if its brand new and i've personally bought it over a counter, no way to tell if an item has been mistreated between the maker testing it and you receiving it. if you dont have a tripod yet place the camera with lens on a table and have a cereal box across the room or a few feet away which has fine text on it then use the 2 or 10 sec timer to take an image i know you are new to photography at the moment so i wont go into all the tech stuff but taking it out side or into a really well lit area will help with clarity of the image if you are using full auto mode if the lens cant form a clean sharp image then you might want to investigate further. this of coarse also depends alot on your beginner status but throughout your photography its good to test lenses at home first so you know what they are capable of when out shooting best way to see if there is anything wrong with the camera is to use it, as mentioned if the camera if brand new with warranty better to find out now rather than trying to fight the delivery company because they will ask to what degree the camera is damaged any way if at all do keep the video though
Just tried out the table top trick and after a little fiddling with the timer, got a few good shots in. Looks like everything is fine. Been using the camera all day (probably to the annoyance of the kids, "dad, no more phots please"), inside and out. Loving my purchase. I have a tripod and a wireless remote ready to go. Living in Norway, Im hoping to get some great night sky/northern lights photos. Weather was pretty poop by the time I read your comment, hence the table top trick. I am a novice with this type of camera. Ive had a G15 PowerShot for the last 10 years. Never been happy with my results. 1 day with this camera and im as happy as a kid in a chocolate factory. Thanks for the advice.
