If you have Face + Tracking selected I believe the 80d will disable grid in the view finder. Try selecting another mode.
What other adjustments and to what feature did you change, this info might help us steer us in the right direction to help you.

If the lens is a non-Canon lens without a "chip" then the readings are normal because the camera is unable to talk to the lens.
Here is the Mamiya 50mm f4.5 mounted on my 6D. Lol...the lens is so huge that it practically dwarfs the camera, but what sweet music it makes....
